The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei, which means "Higher Power" and Ki, which means "life force energy". So reiki is life force energy guided from a higher power.

In a Reiki session, I send Reiki energy to each of your body’s energy centers, and this activates your body’s natural ability to heal. A 30 - 45 minute session can restore balance in your mental, emotional, and physical body. You might feel a lift in your energy, emotions may arise, or you might just feel warmth or tingling. Overall benefits of reiki include pain relief, stress reduction, a boost in your mental state, and calming of the nervous system. A session will last 30 - 45 minutes.

Usui Reiki is a form of Japanese energy healing that dates back to the early 1900s. It was created by Mikao Usui, a man who dedicated his life to exploring systems of healing and enlightenment, (like, Chinese Medicine,  other Eastern systems like Chi Gong, the Japanese equivalent Kiko). At one point, he became a Buddhist monk and took a 21-day retreat on a mountain in Japan. There, he had a vision of white light entering his head, expanding his awareness. It was his Reiki attunement.

Usui went on to attune and teach 16 people his Reiki in his lifetime, and one woman he taught, from Hawaii, brought it to the US, and it grew from there. The practice has evolved in many different ways, but the Usui Reiki principles set forth by Usui underpin its foundation: 

Just for today do not anger.

Just for today do not worry

Just for today be grateful

Just for today work hard

Just for today be kind to all living things. 

Hence, Reiki is a spiritual path (or personal development path, if you like), as well as a healing technique. When we receive Reiki, our mental, emotional, and physical bodies can come back into a state of balance. In short, Reiki activates our natural ability to heal.
